toddlers need safe floors, clean bathrooms, food cut into safe pieces, naps, patience, outdoor play, and adults with enough strength left to guide them.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    They know school-age children need shoes, clothes, food, supplies, sleep, dental care, transport, supervision, correction, play, and time.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    They know teenagers need food, space, guidance, privacy, transportation, clothing, emotional steadiness, skill development, and adults who still have enough life in them to notice what is happening.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    They know parents need time.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    They know a mother cannot be everywhere at once.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    They know a father cannot be everywhere at once.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    They know parents cannot work full hours, commute long distances, pay rising bills, monitor every school message, manage every appointment, protect every child online, cook healthy food, clean the house, fold the laundry, maintain the marriage, care for elders, discipline children, and still be expected to act as if the household has no structural need for support.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <h2>Governments Cannot Pretend They Do Not Know<\/h2>\n\n  <p>\n    Governments cannot act surprised.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    They cannot pretend they do not know.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    They cannot design housing, taxes, childcare policy, food policy, public transit, zoning, health systems, school systems, parks, wages, parental leave, and public safety as if a family is just one private consumer unit walking around with a shopping cart.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    A family is not a single consumer unit.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    A family is a living structure.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    A husband and wife have one level of need.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    A husband and wife with one baby have another level of need.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    A husband and wife with two children have another level of need.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    A husband and wife with costs rise with household size.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    A couple can live in a smaller place.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Add a baby, and space changes.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Add a second child, and sleeping arrangements change.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Add children of different ages, and privacy changes.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Add school supplies, cribs, beds, clothing storage, bathroom use, laundry, food storage, stroller space, outdoor play needs, and the home itself changes.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Yet housing policy and housing markets often act as if a growing family should simply \u201cfigure it out.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Figure out the bigger rent.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Figure out the down payment.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Figure out the mortgage.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Figure out the commute from the only place they can afford.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Figure out sharing rooms.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Figure out unsafe neighborhoods.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Figure out lack of outdoor space.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Figure out how to raise children in housing designed more around profit than family life.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Then when the floor falls out, the family is called unstable.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    But HUD\u2019s 2024 homelessness reporting recorded 39 percent more people in families with children experiencing homelessness from 2023 to 2024.\n
