was never simply tagging along.\n  <\/p>\n<\/header>\n\n<main class=\"content\">\n\n  <div class=\"family-card\">\n    <h3>Meet the Ndiaye Family<\/h3>\n    <p>\n      <strong>Ibrahima Ndiaye<\/strong>, 25; his wife\n      <strong>Aminata Ndiaye<\/strong>, 22; their daughter\n      <strong>Awa<\/strong>, 4; and their baby son\n      <strong>Malick<\/strong>, 11 months.\n    <\/p>\n  <\/div>\n\n  <p>\n    Ibrahima and Aminata are a young Senegalese couple raising two small children\n    inside Trott Bailey Family Civilization.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Ibrahima is medium height with an ordinary lean build, deep brown skin,\n    short tightly coiled hair, a slightly long face and a broad natural nose.\n    His face is not perfectly symmetrical. One side of his smile lifts a little\n    more than the other, which becomes especially noticeable when Awa says\n    something ridiculous.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Aminata has rich deep brown skin, an oval-to-long face, strong cheekbones,\n    deep brown eyes and short natural hair that she sometimes wears in small twists.\n    She still looks very young because she is very young. She has the ordinary\n    softness of a mother who has carried two children, and nothing about her needs\n    polishing into a fashion image.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Awa is four years old and looks four. She has a small round belly, skinny knees,\n    big serious eyes and little puffs or twists that rarely sit exactly the same way\n    on both sides of her head. She can look deeply concerned about something one\n    minute and be laughing hard enough to fall over the next.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Malick is eleven months old, round-cheeked and busy. He has a soft baby belly,\n    chunky thighs, sparse curls, a few little teeth and one ear that sticks out\n    slightly more than the other. He is still at the stage where almost anything\n    can become important if it makes an interesting sound, feels strange under his\n    fingers or can be put near his mouth.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    The family resemblance is easy to see. Awa takes more after Aminata around the\n    eyes and cheeks. Malick has more of Ibrahima\u2019s forehead and mouth. All four have\n    the same calm, thoughtful look when they are watching something closely.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    For today, Ibrahima and Aminata are wearing their\n    <strong>Indigo Stem-Current Companion garments<\/strong>, the paired\n    husband-and-wife clothing species they chose for the outing. Texture routes moved through\n    smooth river stones, wood rounds, sand, leaf mulch and softer planted areas.\n    Sensory gardens brought flowers, herbs, leaves, bark and scent down to child height.\n    There were insect discovery stations, baby crawling grounds, shaded family verandahs\n    and little pockets where families could stop without feeling that they were blocking\n    anybody else.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <div class=\"dialogue\">\n    <p>Aminata looked around.<\/p>\n    <p><strong>\u201cWe are staying all day.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n  <\/div>\n\n  <p>\n    Ibrahima laughed.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    They had barely entered.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Awa had already chosen a direction.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Malick had already chosen the water.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <h2>Malick Finds the Water<\/h2>\n\n  <p>\n    There are some decisions eleven-month-old babies make without consulting their parents.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Malick\u2019s first decision at Ele-Boo-Boo was that the shallow water route belonged to him.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Aminata sat beside the stream and lowered him onto one of the broad flat stones\n    where the water moved gently around his legs.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    He stared.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    He touched it with one hand.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    The water moved away.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    He slapped it.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    That changed everything.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <div class=\"baby-note\">\n    <p>\n      For the next several minutes Malick did not appear to remember that he had\n      parents, a sister or any other obligations.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n      He slapped.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n      He squeezed water between his fingers.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n      He reached for the ripples.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n      He leaned forward until Aminata caught the back of his smock.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n      Then he discovered that if he hit the water hard enough, some of it landed on his face.\n    <\/p>\n  <\/div>\n\n  <p>\n    He blinked.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Awa laughed.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    So Malick did it again.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    His Early Childhood Voice Smock had been chosen for exactly this kind of day.\n    The wet sections did not become heavy around him, and Aminata did not spend the\n    morning trying to keep him dry.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    There was no point.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    This was water.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    He had found it.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Awa began crossing the route using the wood rounds and stones set into the stream.\n    At four, this was serious business. She stretched both arms out and carefully\n    placed one foot in front of the other.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Ibrahima held her hand for the first few.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <div class=\"dialogue\">\n    <p>Then she told him:<\/p>\n    <p><strong>\u201cI can do it.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n  <\/div>\n\n  <p>\n    So he loosened his grip and walked beside her.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    She made it across three stones by herself, slipped one foot into the water on\n    the fourth and immediately looked back to see whether anybody had noticed.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Everybody had noticed.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Nobody said anything.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Awa continued as though the event had never happened.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <!-- IMAGE SLOT 2\n  <figure class=\"scene\">\n    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"PASTE-WATER-PLAY-IMAGE-URL-HERE\"\n         alt=\"Malick splashing in the shallow water route while Awa crosses the texture path.\">\n    <figcaption>\n      Water first. Everything else could wait.\n    <\/figcaption>\n  <\/figure>\n  -->\n\n  <h2>The Ground Changes Under Their Feet<\/h2>\n\n  <p>\n    Farther along, the water route widened into the texture paths.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Children could move from smooth stone to wood, from wood to sand, then into\n    patches of soft ground materials and planted surfaces.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    For babies, much of this happened much closer to the ground.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Malick crawled.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    That was the point.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Nobody kept lifting him away from every strange surface.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Aminata remained close enough to intervene when needed, but Malick was allowed\n    to put his palms down, stop, inspect, pat, squeeze and crawl again.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    He liked the smooth stones.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    He was suspicious of the sand.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    He sat in it and looked at his hand after the grains stuck to his fingers.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Then he tried the other hand.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    The same thing happened.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    He looked at Aminata as though she might be responsible.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    She laughed.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Awa, meanwhile, had found leaf mulch.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    She marched through it several times because she liked the sound.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Crunch.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Crunch.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Crunch.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Then she made Ibrahima walk through it.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    His steps were heavier.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Awa listened carefully.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <div class=\"dialogue\">\n    <p><strong>\u201cMine sounds better.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n  <\/div>\n\n  <p>\n    Ibrahima accepted the defeat.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <h2>The Insect Discovery Grounds<\/h2>\n\n  <p>\n    The family reached the insect area before lunch.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    This was where Awa\u2019s Voice-Dock garment suddenly became far more interesting to her.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    A steward showed her how she could bring one of the small discovery companions\n    close to the dock on her clothing, record what she noticed and return to it later.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Awa found a butterfly first.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    She watched it for perhaps six seconds.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Then another insect moved.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    That was more interesting.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Then she found a seed pod.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    That was apparently also part of insect learning now.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    At four, categories are flexible.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    She recorded three things in quick succession, none of which Ibrahima could\n    understand because Awa whispered into the Voice-Dock as though the butterfly\n    might steal the information.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Malick was nearby at a baby-level insect discovery circle.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    He could touch large safe forms showing wings, beetle shells, caterpillar shapes\n    and different textures without anybody expecting him to understand what species\n    he was studying.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    He simply touched.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    One smooth.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    One bumpy.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    One ridged.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    One soft.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    One made a noise when he hit it.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Naturally, that one won.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Ibrahima had arrived thinking Malick might enjoy looking around for a while.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    By lunchtime, he had watched his son spend nearly an hour intensely investigating\n    water, stones, sand, leaves, insect shapes and one wooden cup.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    The wooden cup had become especially important.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Malick carried it everywhere.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <!-- IMAGE SLOT 3\n  <figure class=\"scene\">\n    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"PASTE-INSECT-DISCOVERY-IMAGE-URL-HERE\"\n         alt=\"Awa sharing an insect discovery while Malick explores a baby sensory water station.\">\n    <figcaption>\n      Awa had discoveries to record. Malick had found a wooden cup.\n    <\/figcaption>\n  <\/figure>\n  -->\n\n  <h2>Lunch, Rest and Doing Absolutely Nothing for a While<\/h2>\n\n  <p>\n    By midday, both children had slowed down.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    The Ndiayes moved to one of the family rest verandahs.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    The verandah looked back across part of the sensory grounds, so Awa could still\n    watch other children moving through the water while she ate.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Malick ate, drank and then began rubbing his eyes.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    That was the end of Malick.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Aminata settled with him until he fell asleep against her.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Nobody tried to keep the day moving because there were things left to complete.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    The grounds would still be there when he woke up.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Awa stretched across the seating beside Ibrahima.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    For a while, the family did very little.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Ibrahima and Aminata talked.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Awa ate slowly.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Malick slept.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    The orchard moved around them.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Water continued through the little channels below.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Other families came and went.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    A steward carried fresh materials toward one of the discovery stations.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Somewhere farther away, several children were making a tremendous amount of\n    noise near the elephant body.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Awa eventually sat upright.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <div class=\"dialogue\">\n    <p><strong>\u201cI want the elephant.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n  <\/div>\n\n  <p>\n    Of course she did.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <h2>Inside the Elephant<\/h2>\n\n  <p>\n    Malick woke before they reached it.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    The elephant discovery body was much larger from underneath.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Routes passed around, through and beneath it. Some openings were for walking\n    children. Others were low enough for crawling babies. Parts of the exterior\n    could be touched, pushed, turned or listened to. There were protected climbing\n    sections for older children and quieter little chambers below.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Awa disappeared into one opening with Ibrahima following.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Aminata stayed lower with Malick.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    He found a rounded opening in the elephant body and crawled inside.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    For several seconds, Aminata could see only his feet.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Then he reversed.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    His head appeared again.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    He smiled.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Back inside.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Out again.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Inside.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Out.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Apparently they had travelled to Ele-Boo-Boo so Malick could discover a hole.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Aminata sat there and let him.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Awa eventually came down from somewhere above with Ibrahima behind her.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <div class=\"dialogue\">\n    <p><strong>\u201cWe climbed the elephant!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n    <p>Ibrahima corrected her.<\/p>\n    <p><strong>\u201cYou climbed. I followed.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n  <\/div>\n\n  <p>\n    Awa considered that distinction unnecessary.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <h2>Awa Takes Over the Day<\/h2>\n\n  <p>\n    By late afternoon, the family was no longer moving according to any plan.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Awa was choosing.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    She wanted to show Malick the flowers.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Then the water again.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Then the butterfly station again because she had something she needed to record.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Then she wanted to find the crunchy ground for Dad.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Ibrahima asked what the crunchy ground was called.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <div class=\"dialogue\">\n    <p><strong>\u201cCrunchy ground.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n  <\/div>\n\n  <p>\n    Reasonable enough.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Malick had reached the stage where he was alternating between intense concentration\n    and random laughter.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    He crawled toward a patch of low fragrant leaves, touched one, smelled his hand\n    and immediately tasted his fingers.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Aminata redirected the fingers.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    He tried again.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    She redirected them again.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    This disagreement continued quietly for a while.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Eventually Malick found something else to do.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <h2>What Ibrahima Had Been Wrong About<\/h2>\n\n  <p>\n    Earlier that morning, Ibrahima had told Aminata that Malick was probably still\n    too little to understand much of Ele-Boo-Boo.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    He did not mean the baby would get nothing from it.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    He simply thought most of the day would really be for Awa, while Malick came along.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    By the afternoon, he had stopped saying that.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Malick had spent the day making choices.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <div class=\"baby-note\">\n    <p>Water over dry ground.<\/p>\n    <p>Smooth stone over sand.<\/p>\n    <p>The noisy insect form over the quiet one.<\/p>\n    <p>The wooden cup over several far more elaborate objects.<\/p>\n    <p>Crawling into the elephant opening and then immediately crawling back out.<\/p>\n    <p>Watching other babies.<\/p>\n    <p>Watching Awa.<\/p>\n    <p>Watching falling water.<\/p>\n    <p>Touching bark.<\/p>\n    <p>Pulling away from one texture.<\/p>\n    <p>Returning to another.<\/p>\n    <p>Falling asleep when he was finished and waking ready to begin again.<\/p>\n  <\/div>\n\n  <p>\n    Nobody had needed him to explain what he learned.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    At eleven months old, his whole body was doing the learning.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Ibrahima watched him sitting in the shallow water near the end of the day,\n    repeatedly letting a little stream run through his fingers.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <div class=\"dialogue\">\n    <p><strong>\u201cI thought he was too little for most of this.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n    <p>Aminata looked at him.<\/p>\n\n    <p><strong>\u201cHe doesn\u2019t look too little.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n  <\/div>\n\n  <p>\n    No.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    He did not.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <h2>Going Home<\/h2>\n\n  <p>\n    By the time the Ndiayes were ready to leave, Awa\u2019s clothing had collected\n    evidence of almost every part of Ele-Boo-Boo.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    A little dirt.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    A little water.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    A leaf she had deliberately put into one pocket.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Three Voice-Dock recordings.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Something she insisted was an important stick.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Malick was cleaner only because somebody had rinsed him.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    He was tired enough to rest his head against Ibrahima without protesting.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Aminata looked back across the grounds before they left.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    The elephant body was still busy.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Babies were still crawling through the sensory gardens.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Children were still moving over the texture paths.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Parents were sitting under verandahs, feeding babies, talking, resting or\n    following children who had found one more thing they absolutely had to see\n    before leaving.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    The Ndiayes had come to spend a day at a baby sensory orchard.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Awa had explored almost everything she could reach.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Malick had eaten, slept, splashed, crawled, touched, listened, stared, laughed\n    and spent an unreasonable amount of time carrying a wooden cup.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    And Ibrahima had learned something too.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    The baby had not been tagging along on everyone else\u2019s day.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    <strong>It had been Malick\u2019s day all along.<\/strong>\n  <\/p>\n\n  <div class=\"home-ending\">\n\n    <h2>Later That Evening<\/h2>\n\n    <p>\n      Back home, Malick was washed properly, rubbed dry and changed into something soft.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n      That finished him.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n      By the time Ibrahima and Aminata settled onto the verandah, Malick was already\n      asleep across their arms, clean, warm and completely unaware of anything else\n      happening in the world.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n      Aminata lasted only slightly longer.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n      She leaned against Ibrahima, still holding part of Malick against her chest,\n      and her eyes began closing while they sat there.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n      Ibrahima shifted himself just enough to hold both of them comfortably.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n      Awa had curled up beside them too, still in the clothes that had survived\n      water, crunchy ground, insects, the elephant, three recordings and one\n      extremely important stick.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n      The verandah was quiet.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n      Evening had settled over the neighbourhood.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n      Nobody was asking Malick what he had learned.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n      He was asleep in his mother and father\u2019s arms.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n      That was enough.\n    <\/p>\n\n  <\/div>\n\n  <!--
