TROTT BAILEY FAMILY CIVILIZATION

Jun & Saya — A Love Story

Part Three: Our Land, Our Life

Chapter 13 — The First Plantings

Early one morning, Jun and Saya were finishing breakfast when the Garden Shubaka team arrived at their compound.

They had arranged to begin establishing the first part of their family orchard, and Saya was particularly excited.

She had been thinking about fruit trees ever since their first visit to the land.

Mangoes, guavas, citrus fruits, papayas, bananas, passionfruit, and all sorts of things they could eat fresh, preserve, prepare into drinks, and experiment with in their kitchen.

She was already thinking about ice cream.

Jun knew this, of course.

“How many ice cream flavours have you planned already?” he asked as they walked out to greet the team.

“I haven’t counted.”

“That many?”

Saya laughed.

“You’ll enjoy eating them, so don’t complain!”

“I wasn’t complaining. I was asking when we could start.”

She gave him an affectionate squeeze around the waist.

The Garden Shubaka contributors had brought a selection of young fruit trees, companion plants, suitable growing materials, irrigation equipment, and planting tools. Everything was arranged neatly at a temporary garden service point beside one of the open areas they had selected.

There were no piles of materials scattered across the ground. Young plants were protected from excessive sunlight, their roots kept moist, and the equipment was organized for the day’s work.

Two experienced garden stewards would guide the planting, supported by a younger contributor learning orchard establishment.

The senior steward greeted Jun and Saya warmly.

“Ready to get your hands in the soil?”

“Very!” Saya answered.

“She’s been ready for days,” Jun added.

They all laughed.

Walking the Ground

Before planting anything, they walked through the area together.

The land near their house included sunny openings, established trees, gentle changes in elevation, and routes leading toward their little river.

The stewards had studied the soil, drainage, sunlight, wind exposure, and the existing vegetation. They showed Jun and Saya which areas would suit different fruit trees and which places should remain undisturbed.

One of the larger trees had a broad canopy stretching over a naturally cool area of ground.

Jun stopped underneath it.

“I’d like to keep this whole section,” he said, looking upward.

There were several birds moving through the branches.

Saya stood beside him, watching a little bird disappear into the leaves.

“Yes, and it would make a lovely place to sit.”

They discussed how a comfortable walking route could pass nearby without disturbing the roots or any nesting habitat.

The stewards showed them how the orchard could occupy the existing open spaces while preserving mature vegetation, useful native plants, and a protected living corridor along the river.

Jun and Saya liked this arrangement.

Their land could provide an abundance of food while remaining a home for many other living things.

The Orchard Begins

At the first planting area, the stewards laid out the young trees according to their mature sizes and growing needs.

The mango trees needed ample room for their developing crowns. Papayas could grow in brighter spaces with suitable drainage, while banana groupings needed thoughtful placement for moisture, shelter, and access.

Guavas and selected citrus varieties would fill other parts of the orchard where the conditions suited them.

Passionfruit would have its own support structure, allowing the vines to climb without smothering nearby trees.

Saya examined the young mango plants.

“Imagine these when they’re full of fruit.”

Jun smiled.

“Imagine us trying to eat all of it.”

“We won’t! We’ll share plenty.”

And she meant it.

From the beginning, they wanted their compound to contribute beyond their own household. As their orchard developed and matured, its harvest could nourish their family, visiting relatives, neighbours, and others throughout the civilization.

Some fruit might be eaten fresh, some prepared into food, and some shared through the civilization’s abundance networks.

The steward explained how the team would help them manage seasonal harvests, tree health, pruning, and any production beyond their immediate household needs.

Then it was time to plant.

Jun helped prepare the first planting space, checking the depth and width with the steward.

Saya carefully positioned the young tree while they adjusted its height so the root flare sat correctly relative to the surrounding soil.

Together they returned the soil around the roots, watered the tree gently, and arranged an appropriate layer of mulch around its base, leaving the trunk clear.

The steward demonstrated how to check the moisture beneath the mulch and explained that the young tree would need consistent care while its roots established.

Saya stood up and admired it.

“Our first mango tree!”

Jun slipped his arm around her.

“The first of many.”

They looked at the little tree for a moment.

One day it could be much taller than both of them.

More Than Fruit Trees

As they continued working, the garden team introduced the companion plants that would grow among and around the fruit trees.

Some would protect the soil from harsh sun and rainfall. Others would attract pollinators, support beneficial insects, or contribute organic matter that could be returned to the ground.

Suitable nitrogen-fixing plants could also help support the orchard’s wider nutrient cycle when managed appropriately.

They discussed how plant residues, pruned leaves, and properly processed organic materials could return nutrients to the soil.

Saya was particularly interested in what useful herbs and edible plants could occupy selected spaces before the larger trees developed their canopies.

Jun asked about the insects and small wildlife likely to appear as the orchard matured.

The stewards explained how different plant layers could create varied habitats while also supporting fruit production.

“So we’re not just planting mangoes,” Saya observed.

“We’re establishing a living orchard,” one of the stewards replied.

Jun liked that.

He was already thinking about the kinds of birds that might visit the flowering trees and feed on the insects attracted to the orchard.

They continued planting, sometimes working beside one another and sometimes joining different members of the team to learn a particular technique.

Whenever Jun discovered something interesting, he called Saya over. When she learned something she wanted to try, he came to see.

Lunch Under the Trees

By midday, everyone was ready for a break.

They washed up and gathered beneath the shade of the large tree they had admired earlier.

Lunch had been arranged through their household provisions, with fresh food, fruit, and cool drinks for everyone.

The younger garden contributor was telling them about a family orchard he had helped establish in another district.

It had several unusual fruit varieties, and Saya immediately wanted to know more.

“Did they make anything from the fruit?” she asked.

“Oh, plenty! They have a fruit preparation area. They make juices, preserved fruits, frozen desserts—”

“Frozen desserts?”

Jun laughed.

“Here we go.”

The young contributor smiled.

“They make some very good ones.”

Saya wanted to visit.

She told the team about her Gaúcha ice cream Shubaka experience and the stretchy ice cream preparations she had learned.

Before long, they were discussing fruit textures, acidity, sweetness, different milk preparations, and how unfamiliar fruits might behave in frozen desserts.

Jun was thoroughly entertained.

He enjoyed seeing Saya talk about things she loved, especially when her curiosity led everybody into another lively discussion.

He was looking forward to all the delicious experiments that would come from it.

The Last Tree of the Day

By late afternoon, the first planting areas were beginning to take shape.

The trees were still small, with large spaces between them to accommodate future growth. Protective groundcover and carefully placed mulch helped define the new orchard beds.

Temporary watering arrangements had been connected and checked, with the irrigation system set up to supply moisture according to the plants’ actual needs rather than flooding the ground indiscriminately.

The garden team would continue monitoring the young plantings and supporting Jun and Saya as the orchard developed.

Before finishing, Jun and Saya planted one more tree together.

This one was a guava.

Saya lowered it carefully into position while Jun checked its alignment.

They filled the remaining space around the roots, watered it, and stood back to admire their work.

Saya brushed a little soil from Jun’s arm.

“Look at us.”

“What?”

“Married. With a home. Animals. And now an orchard!”

Jun laughed and drew her close.

“And a river.”

“And a river!”

“And a whole lot of birds.”

“Yes, Jun, and your birds!”

They laughed together.

A Fruitful Beginning

After the team had cleaned and returned their tools and organized the remaining materials for future planting days, Jun and Saya took another walk through the new orchard.

Everything looked different already.

Only that morning, the area had been mostly open ground. Now young trees stood in their chosen places, with companion plants beginning the work of covering and protecting the soil.

The mangoes, guavas, papayas, bananas, and citrus would need time to grow. Some would produce relatively quickly. Others would require years of patient care before reaching full production.

There was no need to hurry them.

Jun and Saya had an entire married life ahead of them in which to enjoy the changes.

They walked slowly toward their home, holding hands.

From their verandah they could see part of the new orchard, the green sweep of the land beyond it, and the trees lining the river.

Saya was already talking about where they could place comfortable seating among the growing trees.

Jun suggested a little observation place where they could sit together and watch birds visit the orchard.

“With somewhere to put our food,” Saya added.

“Naturally.”

“And ice cream.”

“Especially ice cream.”

They settled together on the verandah, pleased with their day’s work.

The orchard was only beginning.

There would be many more planting days, growing seasons, harvests, and opportunities to learn. Their animals would multiply, their land would become increasingly productive, and their family compound would continue taking shape.

And in time, perhaps their children would run among the trees they had planted today, gathering fruit and asking questions about everything growing around them.

For now, Jun and Saya sat close together, looking over their first plantings.

It had been a wonderful day.

And tomorrow, there would be more wonderful things to do.
