A room can be swept while crumbs remain\n    beneath the furniture and between the cushions.\n    A child may put away one thing while leaving\n    everything else scattered about.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    These are ordinary things children need to\n    learn, and sometimes even adults have not\n    developed the habit of doing them thoroughly.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    We want our children to know how to care for\n    themselves, maintain a home properly, work\n    cooperatively with other people and recognise\n    when something needs attention.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    We also want them to know how to grow food.\n    How to examine a piece of ground, gather the\n    materials available around them, prepare\n    fertile soil, plant, maintain their crops\n    and understand what is happening as the\n    plants develop.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Fallen leaves, grass cuttings and suitable\n    kitchen scraps can become useful materials\n    for growing food. A child who understands\n    how these things decompose can begin learning\n    how to improve a piece of ground and keep\n    it productive.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    These are two practical branches we are\n    developing through <strong>NoDumbDumbs<\/strong>,\n    the lifelong capability development system\n    of Trott Bailey Family Civilization.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    We want children to have proper equipment,\n    experienced people to learn from, pleasant\n    surroundings and enough time to practise\n    until they genuinely understand what\n    they are doing.\n  <\/p>\n\n<\/section>\n\n\n<!-- PART ONE -->\n\n<section class=\"ndd-part\">\n\n  <div class=\"ndd-part-label\">\n    Part One \u00b7 Household Care and Cooperation\n  <\/div>\n\n  <h2>\n    Home Training Begins with Parents\n  <\/h2>\n\n  <p>\n    Home training forms character, and the\n    early years are when children especially\n    need their parents. They need generous\n    time together before branching out more\n    fully from their homes into the wider\n    civilization.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    This doesn&#8217;t mean children never leave\n    home or go anywhere. It&#8217;s no rigid system.\n    Children can travel, visit other families,\n    play with neighbouring children, explore\n    and enjoy the many opportunities available\n    throughout the civilization.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    But these early years are where family\n    unity, mutual understanding, love and\n    growth have such an important influence\n    on childhood. Learning from parents\n    is particularly important.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Children observe how their parents speak,\n    how they treat one another, how they care\n    for their home, how they manage difficulties,\n    how they show affection and how they conduct\n    themselves among other people.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Parents also come to understand their\n    children. They learn their different\n    personalities, interests, habits,\n    difficulties and ways of communicating.\n    This understanding grows through the\n    ordinary experiences of family life.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Before age seven, our main attention\n    is on reading, mathematics, basic writing,\n    playing, creativity and home training.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Children learn cleanliness, discipline,\n    respect for parents and elders, and\n    gradually how to care for their own\n    belongings and surroundings.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    A younger child may begin by putting away\n    toys, returning shoes to their proper place,\n    helping to wipe a table or carrying\n    something to the kitchen.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    As children grow, they can undertake\n    more complicated responsibilities.\n    They continue learning these habits within\n    the family while participating more widely\n    in civilization life.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    NoDumbDumbs builds on this foundation,\n    giving children further opportunities\n    to practise their abilities, cooperate\n    with others and become capable of\n    maintaining their surroundings.\n  <\/p>\n\n<\/section>\n\n\n<!-- HOUSEHOLD TRAINING HOUSE -->\n\n<section class=\"ndd-subsection\">\n\n  <h2>\n    The NoDumbDumbs Household Training House\n  <\/h2>\n\n  <p>\n    For this branch of learning, the\n    classroom is literally a house.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    It contains a proper kitchen, dining\n    room, living room, washing facilities,\n    furnishings, storage areas, cleaning\n    equipment and the ordinary things\n    found in a functioning home.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Children learn how to care for a home\n    by actually doing the work.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Each class contains no more than twelve\n    children, with experienced adult\n    instructors and teenage apprentices\n    assisting them.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    The children can be organised into pairs\n    and small working groups. Each child\n    has sufficient space and equipment to\n    practise, while the instructors observe\n    and help them understand what needs\n    improving.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    We want a comfortable, attractive house\n    with actual Trott Bailey furnishings\n    and household systems. The children\n    should enjoy being there while learning\n    the responsibilities involved in\n    maintaining such a place.\n  <\/p>\n\n<\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"ndd-subsection\">\n\n  <h3>\n    Washing Dishes and Resetting the Sink\n  <\/h3>\n\n  <p>\n    Let us begin with washing dishes.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    A child should know what to do with\n    a plate after eating. Food remains\n    are removed appropriately, the plate\n    is washed and rinsed, then dried or\n    placed where it can drain. Afterwards,\n    it is returned to its proper location.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    But the work does not finish with\n    washing the plate.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    The sink may contain food particles,\n    water and cleaning materials. These\n    must also be attended to. The sink\n    is cleaned, the surrounding surfaces\n    wiped, the equipment returned and\n    the washing area left ready for\n    the next person.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Our household training uses the\n    <strong>Kultan Clean-to-Dry Rinse Body<\/strong>,\n    an authored system which organises\n    the movement of objects through\n    receiving, sorting, washing, rinsing,\n    draining, drying and returning.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    The children learn how the system\n    works and why things belong in\n    particular places.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Some practise washing. Others learn\n    to dry and return dishes. A teenage\n    apprentice can help them understand\n    how to restore the entire washing\n    area to good order.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    They return to the work until\n    they can perform it properly\n    without needing every movement\n    explained to them.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <!-- BIG KING MEDIA GALLERY:\n       Scene 13A \u2014 Washing Dishes\n       Scene 13B \u2014 Dry, Return and Reset\n  -->\n  <div class=\"ndd-gallery-slot\"\n       data-scenes=\"13A,13B\"><\/div>\n\n<\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"ndd-subsection\">\n\n  <h3>\n    Sweeping, Vacuuming and Caring for Furnishings\n  <\/h3>\n\n  <p>\n    Sweeping a room requires more understanding\n    than simply moving a broom across the floor.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Children learn to clean along the edges\n    of furniture, reach into corners, gather\n    debris and examine the room to see whether\n    anything has been missed.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    They also learn to use a vacuum cleaner,\n    recognise which attachments are suitable\n    for different surfaces and return the\n    equipment in good condition.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    One of our developed learning scenes\n    shows children cleaning between the\n    cushions of a Family Bloom Sofa.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    A child uses a small handheld vacuum,\n    carefully guiding its narrow nozzle\n    into the spaces between the cushions.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Another child lifts a removable cushion\n    so that crumbs and other debris can\n    be reached. A teenage apprentice\n    assists while the instructor observes.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Once the work is finished, the cushions\n    are returned to their proper positions,\n    the vacuum is cared for and the\n    room is inspected.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    The children are learning to notice\n    what needs cleaning, select suitable\n    equipment, handle furnishings carefully\n    and complete the work.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <!-- BIG KING MEDIA GALLERY:\n       Scene 13D \u2014 Sweeping, Vacuuming\n       and Cushion Care\n  -->\n  <div class=\"ndd-gallery-slot\"\n       data-scenes=\"13D\"><\/div>\n\n<\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"ndd-subsection\">\n\n  <h3>\n    Cooperation and Good Communication\n  <\/h3>\n\n  <p>\n    Maintaining a home also requires people\n    to cooperate with one another.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    In the dining room, perhaps three children\n    are responsible for clearing, cleaning\n    and resetting the table.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    One begins collecting the vessels.\n    Another prepares the cleaning materials,\n    while the third returns chairs and\n    other objects to their places.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    They need to communicate.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Who is doing what? Has the table been\n    cleared? Does somebody need assistance?\n    Is the surface ready to be wiped?\n    Have the dishes been returned?\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Children practise asking questions,\n    listening to one another, agreeing\n    on responsibilities, giving useful\n    explanations and making corrections\n    without unnecessary quarrelling.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    We deliberately teach good communication\n    alongside practical household work.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    A home is shared by people with different\n    needs, interests and responsibilities.\n    Learning how to work together contributes\n    to a more pleasant and orderly household.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <h3>\n    Finishing and Inspecting the Work\n  <\/h3>\n\n  <p>\n    After the children have cleaned the\n    dining room or living room, they examine\n    the completed work.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Is the floor properly cleaned? Are\n    the furnishings returned? Is anything\n    still dirty? Are the tools clean\n    and back in their places?\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    They make whatever corrections are needed.\n    Then the room is ready for family life again.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    There is considerable pleasure in sitting\n    down in a clean, pretty, orderly room,\n    knowing how to take care of it and\n    leave it that way for others.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <!-- BIG KING MEDIA GALLERY:\n       Scene 13C \u2014 Working Together to\n       Reset the Dining Room\n\n       Scene 13E \u2014 Restoring the House\n       to Order\n  -->\n  <div class=\"ndd-gallery-slot\"\n       data-scenes=\"13C,13E\"><\/div>\n\n<\/section>\n\n\n<!-- PART TWO: SOIL AND GROWING FOOD -->\n\n<section class=\"ndd-part\">\n\n  <div class=\"ndd-part-label\">\n    Part Two \u00b7 Soil Fertility and Food Growing\n  <\/div>\n\n  <h2>\n    Learning to Prepare Fertile Ground\n  <\/h2>\n\n  <p>\n    The second branch of our training\n    takes the children outdoors.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    We want them to know how to prepare\n    ground for growing food, improve soil\n    fertility and make good use of the\n    organic materials available in\n    their surroundings.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    One of the methods we have been\n    developing is the preparation of\n    small <strong>fertile islands<\/strong>.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    These are deliberately improved planting\n    areas within a larger piece of ground,\n    useful for investigating how different\n    soil compositions affect plant growth.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    A child might begin with sandy ground,\n    soil with little organic matter or a\n    place where plants have previously struggled.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Before adding anything, we want the child\n    to examine the ground and consider\n    what might be useful.\n  <\/p>\n\n<\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"ndd-subsection\">\n\n  <h2>\n    Our Experience Growing Food in Sandy Ground\n  <\/h2>\n\n  <p>\n    Our family has been experimenting with\n    growing food in Prado, Bahia, including\n    along a stretch of sandy ground where\n    we have established different growing areas.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Among the things we have worked with\n    are fallen organic matter, decomposing\n    coconut wood, kitchen returns, mulch\n    and charred wood.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    We have tried preparing small planting\n    areas with different materials and\n    observing how the plants respond.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    These experiences have raised further\n    questions about how organic materials\n    decompose, how sandy ground retains\n    water and nutrients, and how preparing\n    a small fertile area may affect\n    the plants growing there.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    We have not conducted controlled\n    comparisons of every composition,\n    so we should be careful about\n    claiming which materials caused\n    particular results.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    But the work has given us practical\n    questions worth investigating further.\n    We want children to have opportunities\n    to make these investigations themselves,\n    using real ground, real growing\n    materials and actual plants.\n  <\/p>\n\n<\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"ndd-subsection\">\n\n  <h2>\n    Learning to Read the Ground\n  <\/h2>\n\n  <p>\n    The first field lesson begins\n    with observation.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Children examine exposed soil, ground\n    beneath trees, places covered by grass\n    and areas where fallen leaves have\n    been decomposing.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    They feel differences in texture,\n    observe moisture, examine roots\n    and look for evidence of organisms\n    living in the soil.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Beneath established vegetation,\n    fallen leaves, roots and other\n    organic materials may have been\n    contributing to the soil for\n    many years.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    The children can compare this\n    ground with nearby exposed areas.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    They also observe what happens\n    when water is applied. Does it\n    drain quickly? Does it remain\n    near the surface? Does the soil\n    become compacted?\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    These observations help them begin\n    to understand what sort of preparation\n    may be required before planting.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <!-- BIG KING MEDIA GALLERY:\n       Scene 14A \u2014 Reading the Ground\n  -->\n  <div class=\"ndd-gallery-slot\"\n       data-scenes=\"14A\"><\/div>\n\n<\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"ndd-subsection\">\n\n  <h2>\n    Composting Leaves, Grass and Kitchen Returns\n  <\/h2>\n\n  <p>\n    There are many materials around a\n    family compound that can become\n    useful in preparing fertile soil.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Fallen leaves and grass cuttings\n    are good examples.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Dry leaves are generally carbon-rich,\n    while fresh grass cuttings contain\n    more nitrogen and moisture.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    When combined in suitable proportions,\n    kept moist and provided with enough\n    air, these materials can decompose\n    into compost.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Children can gather suitable materials,\n    prepare them, make compost mixtures\n    and observe how they change over time.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    They learn what happens when the\n    mixture is too wet, too dry\n    or too compacted.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    They examine finished compost and\n    compare its texture, smell and\n    appearance with the fresh materials\n    from which it was made.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Decomposition takes time.
