garbage and waste will not\n      one day make it into your rivers and seas?\n    <\/p>\n\n    <div class=\"tb-fact\">\n      <p>\n        According to Japan&#8217;s own Ministry of the\n        Environment, the country generated\n        <span class=\"tb-number\">38.11 million tonnes<\/span>\n        of municipal garbage in FY2024.\n      <\/p>\n    <\/div>\n\n    <p>\n      You use NHK World Japan to present yourselves to\n      the world as this desirable place filled with\n      beautiful nature and upstanding, talented people.\n      Yet when you look a little bit closer,\n      <span class=\"tb-hotmess\">\n        your country is a hot mess.\n      <\/span>\n    <\/p>\n\n    <div class=\"tb-fact\">\n      <p>\n        A government household-garbage survey found\n        that packaging accounted for\n        <span class=\"tb-number\">54.3%<\/span>\n        of household garbage by volume in FY2025.\n        And in 2025, Japan exported\n        <span class=\"tb-number\">535,000 tonnes<\/span>\n        of plastic waste.\n      <\/p>\n    <\/div>\n\n    <div class=\"tb-fact\">\n      <p>\n        Your own government estimates that\n        <span class=\"tb-number\">\n          4.61 million tonnes\n        <\/span>\n        of edible food were wasted in FY2024.\n      <\/p>\n    <\/div>\n\n    <div class=\"tb-challenge\">\n      <p>\n        Imagine how much garbage could be prevented\n        by providing free meals in public kitchens,\n        free food from public orchards, and reusable\n        dishes instead of mountains of disposable\n        packaging.\n      <\/p>\n    <\/div>\n\n    <div class=\"tb-knowledge\">\n\n      <p>\n        All your knowledge, yet such an attitude of\n        exclusivity and secrecy. Why not put it to work?\n    <\/p>\n\n    <div class=\"tb-nature\">\n\n      <p>\n        Are ordinary Japanese people enjoying the\n        clear waters? Are they out kayaking?\n        Eating from the loquat orchards?\n        Eating fresh oysters?\n        Or are they busy at home sorting garbage\n        and dodging trash fines?\n      <\/p>\n\n      <p class=\"tb-freedom\">\n        Why don&#8217;t you just be a free country\n        for your own citizens?\n      <\/p>\n\n    <\/div>\n\n    <div class=\"tb-fertility\">\n      <p>\n        And look at your birth rate!
