In this episode of Step by Step Solar made possible by the Trot Bailey University Kimroy Bailey provides a comprehensive guide on how to install a 1 kW wind turbine to complement your solar panel installation.
How to Install a Wind Turbine, Part 2: Step by Step 1kW Wind Turbine⛵Installation Guide for Beginners Online Training Course?
This 1000 Watts or more popularly 1kW wind turbine at this particular location produced the equivalent power of 8 solar panels each rated at 250W. Here is a quick calculation to see how is that possible. 8 solar panels x 250 W x 5 Hours of Production per Day = 10,000 Wh/day. (Best Case) 1 wind turbine x 1,000W x 24 hour x 0.46 capacity (Worst Case)= 11,040 Wh/day. Sometimes all day every day we are producing in excess of 1kW which means the capacity =1 and the wind turbine production easily doubles the equivalent solar energy generation.

A lot of our students in the Step by Step Solar Course when learning How to Install a Wind Turbine inquired if the solar panels do not induce turbulence in the wind going to the turbine blades. Actually, the solar panels do not cause turbulence in the wind profile for the wind turbine. Well nobody can see the wind so the greatest of aerodynamic scholars can only speculate and theorize, especially if the test is not in a controlled environment such as a wind tunnel or lab.
No one can really regulate real-world wind and say for an absolute FACT that there is or isn’t any turbulence. So for that reason, here are two pieces of scientific evidence. 1. When we test our wind speed and direction in an adjacent location over a 12 month period using an anemometer and a wind gauge. We realize that our predominant wind direction is due North-East, from the sea as you can imagine, almost 90 degrees to the solar panels for more than 83% of the time. As a result of the wind turbine hardly faces the direction of the solar panels (~17% of the time).
Hence the ‘undisturbed wind’ passes the blade of the wind turbine before going over the solar panels. 2. But we observed something even more interesting when the wind direction changes. When the wind turbine faces the general direction of the solar panels we realize that the revolution per minute and wind power generation increases even though the wind speed is the same. This is due to a wind tunnel effect, the height of the wind turbine’s lowest blade is about the height of the highest point of the solar panels.
Due to the pitch direction of the solar panels about 20 degrees, they create a wind tunnel effect that channels the wind from above the solar panel up to the rotational diameter of the turbine blades. As a result, this increases rotation and in turn, increases wind production.
In conclusion, the solar panels contribute positively to wind production, in fact, we wouldn’t mind if the wind direction constantly changes to South-West since the solar panels constantly amplify our production output.
