Kimroy Bailey Foundation: Taking a Basic School off the Grid

The Kimroy Bailey Foundation aims to promote  renewable energy utilization by installing wind turbines and solar systems in schools across Jamaica and the Caribbean. The donation campaign for our foundation was delayed due to a few legal and technical issues relating to registration of the Foundation, authorizing donations et al. Thankfully I can now proudly state that  the ‘I’s have been dotted and the ‘T’s have been crossed and the organization is now preparing to move forward to undertake fundraising activities to complete its very first project. This project aims to create a rural renewable energy headquarter by taking a Basic School, a Community Center and a Baptist Church all off the Grid using a wind turbine and solar panels.

This Rural Renewable Energy Headquarter, rescheduled to be completed in August 2013 will be located in a small farming community called Litchfield in the Parish of Trelawny at the entrance to the Cockpit Country. The project goal incorporates powering the Litchfield Basic School, the Litchfield Baptist Church and the Litchfield Community Center all located on the church’s property. The church have partnered with our Foundation to assist in fundraising activities, organizing community gathering for education sessions and volunteering for renewable outreach and information dissemination in the area.  The Litchfield Basic School is the primary concentration for our Foundation, home to over 140 students, the school has 4 class rooms and employ about 7 staff members. The electrical connection to the school was disconnected twice last year due to their inability of the pay the monthly light bill.

How can you help to take a Basic School off the Grid

Using a wind turbine and solar panels this renewable energy headquarter will serve as a training facility for youths in and around the community and surrounding rural areas. This will aid the Foundation’s mandate as we go beyond the walls of renewable energy but educate farmers as to the environmental impact of cutting down trees to be used for yam stick, using fire to clear their land which frequently results in a wildfire and the impact of chemicals on the soil and rivers among other environmental issues.

This website have been awarded for presenting innovative renewable energy ideas with the award winning article: 100% Renewable Jamaica at the Jamaica log Awards 2013 and have since published trending posts such as: Put the Wind to Work, Island wide Blackout and Funding an Offshore Wind Farm. In a quest to ensure that this website serves to be more than mere words our non-profit organization decided to put the words of this website to action and be a pioneer willing to go beyond pointing fingers but present and implement practical solutions.

An important aspect of the Rural Renewable Energy Headquarter is to ensure that beneficiary of the system understands that renewable energy is a lot more than a wind turbine or a solar panel; renewable energy is a way of life. We will be using volunteers to empower home owners, youths in the area, church members, farmers and basic school parents about ways they can contribute to lowering Jamaica’s demand for imported oil by reducing their energy consumption habits and practicing energy conservation. It is estimated that up to 40% of average house hold energy bill is wasted energy and these are costs that could be avoided if energy conservation is properly practiced in the home. This will not only allow the rural residents to enjoy lower energy bills but also help to reduce the total barrels of oil imported on a monthly and an annual basis to generate electricity.

The idea of The Kimroy Bailey Foundation was generated after competing in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineer, the World’s Largest Professional body, Global Humanitarian Research Competition held in Washington, USA and going up against countries such as: Australia, The United Kingdom, Pakistan, India and The USA to name a few, our small island in the sun, Jamaica land we love, was placed 2nd for my Tropical Storm Robotic Wind Turbine Research which I completed as a student at the University of Technology, Jamaica. I now operate the Kimroy Bailey Foundation on a full time basis, I am also engaged in public speaking and renewable energy presentations. I also offer the service of renewable energy consultancy to corporations or individuals interested in going off the Grid or reducing their energy bills using energy conservation techniques.
