UTech IEEE Student Branch

The University of Technology,  Jamaica Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineer (IEEE) Student Branch was recently featured in the IEEE Potentials Magazine. The article which was done by Mr. Craig Causer, managing editor of the IEEE Potentials and published in the September/October issue. This post is a review of the article, but I HIGHLY recommend that you spare the 5 -10 minutes and read the article on the growth of one of the most active IEEE Student Branch in Region 3.

The three page article opened with an inviting photograph of the Dunn’s River falls and embraces a totally Jamaican title: “Memba Mi Tell Yu”. It started with a memorable experience between a Jamaican tour operator and the author and his wife during their honeymoon visited in 2006.

“…One morning, while on an excursion to the White River, our driver was expounding on the general vibe of the country. “In Jamaica,” he said, “there are no problems – only situations. Left your money at home? No problem…Got a flat tire? No problem…Forget to tell your wife you’re spending a late night out? – Now that’s a situation!” The message came though loud and clear…”

The article continued to link problems and situations faced by the IEEE Executive Committee at the University of Technology and how they over came those obstacles to make the UTech IEEE Student Branch a model for engineers world wide wanting to build a strong student community.

Mr. Causer apparently did a comprehensive study of the Jamaican culture and our terminologies with sub headings such as Positive Vibration and the Sun is Shining which capture the essence of where the student branch have been and where the group is heading. Positive Vibration highlighted the branches success at the 2011 IEEE SoutheastCon in Nashville, Tennessee among other activities which contributed to the growth of the society.

As a result of the group’s success at the IEEE SoutheastCon 2011, the SB was featured in the University’s Newsletter, in the Jamaica Observer, The Gleaner Newpapers, and on the National Television Station’s morning program: Smile Jamaica

A new Initiative that the SB will be starting this year is an Award Ceremony for active student members. the Award presentation will include A certificate or plaque signed and presented by either the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering or the Chair of the Jamaica Section.
