Letter to Mayor of Sao Paulo: When Life in Sao Paulo City became unbearable
3. Comprei pipoca e eles disseram a mesma coisa. Ele pegou o papel higiênico e jogou no chão molhado. Eu me perguntei quem faria algo assim. “
“Hello, my name is Kimroy Bailey and my wife is Sherika Trott Bailey. My family and I live in the CAEF in the city center. There are a number of negative incidents against my family that I would like to report. Since we moved into our apartment, we could have been electrocuted on three different occasions. The first time was from an exposed light switch at shoulder height, which my wife leaned on and was shocked. The second time was with a faulty hot water heater shower, which shocked my wife. The last time was after they removed our TV to repair it and left the electrical wires, which were already a poor electrical job, they left the wires exposed, which caused two wires to cross, activating the raw electrical current and starting to vibrate loudly in the wires. Two staff members witnessed this and had to turn off our circuit breaker overnight, and an electrician witnessed this when he came the next day to fix it. Thank God our baby didn’t climb onto the bed to touch the wires. Thank God we saw when the electrical wires broke and…” They vibrated, or we might have accidentally touched them. We let all these incidents slide and didn’t make a fuss. They came and fixed it… Okay. They had a cockroach infestation problem in the rooms for months before fixing it. Even on the first day we arrived, the room wasn’t clean, the bathroom still had some urine on it. The pillowcases and sheets were old and dirty. The mattresses were old, disgusting, worn out, with springs showing. We patiently waited through all these things until they finally improved. However, now they want to make our lives difficult by trying to limit all the ways we want to feed ourselves and our children. Frankly, the facilities are not equipped to handle a stable family that wants to prepare meals. Trying to survive solely on the food provided by the facilities is not how we want to live our lives. Breakfast is just bread and coffee, so there’s no nutrition there. Lunch and dinner aren’t always delicious. The time between lunch and dinner is also six hours, so you start to feel hungry again. As adults, we can’t complain. From ourselves, because nobody cares about the adults and their feelings. We have to endure and go hungry. However, no parent wants to see their child not eating or going hungry at odd hours. Naturally, because we want to provide something for them to eat. Children also need plenty of fruit. One orange or one banana a day, per child, is not nutrition. Some support staff here at CAEF Downtown are very disrespectful, indiscreet, and problematic. My family and I do not agree to be governed or ordered around by anyone just because you are providing housing and food. On several occasions I have expressed that my daughter’s 6-year-old daughter, Keilah, and 2-year-old daughter, Kaleeyon, do not like the food prepared in the cafeteria, so they are always hungry. I try to find various alternatives to feed my children, but the staff does everything they can to ensure that the children remain hungry. 1. I ask for extra milk daily, but they said I can only get milk for Kaleeyon, but not for Keilah. 2. I bought cup soup because it is cheap and It’s something warm for the girls to eat, as they don’t like rice and beans. The staff said they wouldn’t use the microwave to help me prepare instant noodles. I explained that only 30 seconds is enough, they said they wouldn’t turn it on, microwaves aren’t for noodles. 3. I bought popcorn and they said the same thing. They won’t use the microwave for 2 minutes to make the popcorn. This after carefully explaining that the girls are hungry and that this is the only thing I can afford for them to eat. However, they insist they won’t help. 4. I have recommended on several occasions that breakfast is not nutritious for adults or children. Breakfast is dry bread and coffee every day for the year and a half we’ve been here. My wife recommended providing more fruit or some chicken, cheese or tuna sandwiches between meals for more nutrition. My children don’t drink coffee, so for over a year they haven’t had any hot drinks in the morning, which is important to start the day. The facility doesn’t even offer simple tea. The children would love it, or at least provide some hot water so we can add sugar and give it to them to start the day. Our daughters go to school early in the morning and therefore can’t eat the bread for breakfast. I’ve tried several times to take the bread to my room to save it for the children when they get home from school, as they hate the constant rice and beans, but the staff prevented me from doing so. They are so disrespectful that they wouldn’t even consider the situation, since the children are hungry and hate the food they prepare.
At least they allow us to save the bread for lunch or dinner when we get home, but no. The staff here are heartless, but pretend to be nice. 6. The last straw was when they wanted to stop my daughter from eating some chips I had bought. They didn’t want her to eat them in the cafeteria at dinnertime. What was the problem with my child eating chips in the cafeteria? They say we can’t leave our children in their rooms while we eat, no matter if they are sleeping, tired, sick, don’t want to go, etc. After a long 6-hour school day, my daughter came home very hungry. I bought the chips for her because I know she won’t eat the food provided. I couldn’t leave her in her room to eat chips because she can’t be left alone in her room, even though she’s a big, smart 6-year-old. The rule said she couldn’t stay and eat. I had no choice but to take her to the cafeteria and allow her to bring her fries, as she was very hungry. No one came to have a reasonable conversation; they just started dictating that my daughter can’t eat fries in the cafeteria. These people are simply crazy and heartless, without professionalism or conscience. You want me to sit and watch my child starve because you decided to create a new rule on a particular day. So my daughter came with her fries to eat while we ate our meal. How far back do we have to go to keep the peace? No more! I don’t care what their psychotic reasoning is. The next thing you know, they want to tell us not to wear this, not to do that, etc. These employees are single people who don’t understand the nuances of family life; they lack compassion because they think it’s not a big deal if you can’t heat water for your child to drink. They don’t understand family life, family comfort, how a grumpy child can affect the peace of the house, etc. The staff are only used to dealing with quarrelsome and contentious people and the scandalous behavior of others in the building. When I refused to stop my daughter from eating her french fries, they even wanted to write to me. So, basically, you’re telling me that on any given day you can invent any idiotic rule that pops into your psychopathic brain and impose it on my family. Then, if we don’t comply, you want to write to us! We won’t accept it! 7. The manager had a meeting with us along with representatives from the Ministry of Health about our children’s health. I am well aware that they are hungry, but buying all the food and fruit they need is very expensive and we simply don’t have the money for it. As a result, after the meeting with the Ministry of Health, we bought a stove to prepare tea, porridge, and soup for our children. These are simple meals that take less than 5 minutes and don’t increase the electricity bill. This will only help us feed our hungry children; we are trying to find solutions instead of complaining. A few days after purchasing the cooktop, an agent entered our room pretending to be doing a maintenance check, but in reality, she only came into the room to look for the cooktop. She saw us and reported to the manager that we were preparing porridge for the children in the room. The manager came and confiscated the stove. This left us at square one, with hungry children. These people walk around all day acting like professionals, every time they ask ‘Is everything alright?’ clearly nothing is alright. They are insensitive and without conscience, but they know how to pretend they care. I ask that they grant us a few minutes a day to use our stove in the cafeteria or in room 501, so we can prepare simple meals for our children for 5 or 10 minutes, but they insist that they only return the stove when we leave the building. If that isn’t blatant hatred, I don’t know what is! 8. On Wednesday, June 26th, we were called to a meeting in room 301. They said my family is disrespectful. This is the same group of people who once got upset because I insisted on asking him to use the microwave to make a cup of soup for my daughter. After he refused, I asked for toilet paper. He grabbed the toilet paper and threw it on the wet floor. I showed him the water from the toilet paper and he said I should pick it up and leave. I left, so there was no hot soup for my daughter and no toilet paper to wipe our butts. However, this disgusting staff expects us to show them respect. The same staff also constantly insinuates that they want to start a fight. These people think we are some punks they can constantly pick on. I have a recording of the meeting and there is also CCTV in the room where the meeting was held where the same individual started yelling like a bitch.
If he wants to fight, tell him to save his breath and just start the fight and get it over with quickly. These employees abuse their power whenever they can, but they talk about wanting respect. I will never respect the people who turn a blind eye to my children who are clearly hungry and pretend to care, but every solution we find, they instantly jump to oppress the families. On the subject of respect, when we were called to the meeting, I asked the lady if she could give me 20 minutes to get ready, she insisted that the meeting was NOW! I said I just wanted to shower and change and she said they were already waiting downstairs for the meeting to start. I wondered who would do something like that. How disrespectful to schedule a meeting without giving at least a few hours’ notice. Anyway, after I rushed to room 301, I was told to sit and wait for a translator to arrive. These are the same employees who insisted I drop what I was doing and come to a meeting, and I end up waiting. These employees abuse their power whenever they can, pretending to be gods and able to dictate whatever they want, and they don’t care about families’ time or personal space. They knock on our bedroom door several times a week for trivial reasons, and if you don’t open the door in time, they get upset and threaten to write and evict your family. The internet/Wi-Fi here is also terrible. It’s slow and unreliable. Frankly, I think the building’s electricity isn’t good. This is a fire trap waiting to happen. If they can’t even get the microwave to work for two minutes, what does that say about the electrical work? A fire trap waiting to happen. We’re on the fifth floor; if we tried to escape a fire down the stairs, it would be a nightmare to get out through the narrow stairs. We would like to be transferred to somewhere clean that prepares meals but also has proper cooking facilities where we can cook for ourselves if we wish; somewhere with fast and reliable internet. A place with green spaces for our children to play in or near a clean outdoor park. I scheduled a meeting with the São Paulo State Secretariat for Social Development at City Hall to present these issues. I decided to inform them about these injustices to see if AEB will address the matter before escalating it during the meeting with the São Paulo State Government. Thank you for listening.
and then
