On November 4th, 2022, they arrived in São Paulo, Brazil, to begin their family challenge. At the time, Kaleeyon was just ten months old, and Keilah was about to turn five. The family’s experiment began with a stay at the Missão de Paz refugee center, where they faced a multitude of struggles, including being separated by gender, limited food options, and a lack of privacy. Despite these hardships, Kimroy and Sherika’s determination to create a better future for their family fueled their efforts to navigate Brazil’s complex refugee system.

Through sheer grit and perseverance, the family discovered new opportunities that had not been available to them before. Within weeks of their arrival, they became aware of a new government housing program and a recently passed bill, Innova Simples, designed to expedite the registration of innovative businesses. After two and a half months in the refugee center, with the help of the Centro de Referência de Assistência Social (CRAS), Centro de Referência e Atendimento para Imigrantes (CRAI), Kimroy and Sherika secured much better housing operated by Associação Evangélica Beneficente (AEB), providing the family with a private room and bathroom.
