Japan, Why Manufacture Mountains of Disposable Packaging?

Japan, why manufacture mountains of disposable packaging, collect it, burn much of it, and ship hundreds of thousands of tonnes abroad when a different food system could prevent so much of that waste from being created?

Then boast about your clean rivers and seas?

Do you think all your garbage and waste will not one day make it into your rivers and seas?

According to Japan’s own Ministry of the Environment, the country generated 38.11 million tonnes of municipal garbage in FY2024.

You use NHK World Japan to present yourselves to the world as this desirable place filled with beautiful nature and upstanding, talented people. Yet when you look a little bit closer, your country is a hot mess.

A government household-garbage survey found that packaging accounted for 54.3% of household garbage by volume in FY2025. And in 2025, Japan exported 535,000 tonnes of plastic waste.

Your own government estimates that 4.61 million tonnes of edible food were wasted in FY2024.

Imagine how much garbage could be prevented by providing free meals in public kitchens, free food from public orchards, and reusable dishes instead of mountains of disposable packaging.

All your knowledge, yet such an attitude of exclusivity and secrecy. Why are you like this? Will you die out with your knowledge? How backward and small-minded can you be? So miserly…

Tuna breeding, orchard growing, precision manufacturing, craftsmanship, interlocking timber for building homes, making trains…

Your skilled people are growing old and dying, while 3.4 billion young people around the world could be taught their knowledge!

One of the wisest men to ever have lived gave us this advice:

Proverbs 11:24–25 (KJV)

“There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth; and there is that withholdeth more than is meet, but it tendeth to poverty.

The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself.”

And Japan, you even have a proverb of your own!

情けは人の為ならず
Nasake wa hito no tame narazu
Kindness given to others eventually comes back to benefit you.

So you already have this wisdom in your own culture. Why not put it to work?

Are ordinary Japanese people enjoying the clear waters? Are they out kayaking? Eating from the loquat orchards? Eating fresh oysters? Or are they busy at home sorting garbage and dodging trash fines?

Why don’t you just be a free country for your own citizens?

And look at your birth rate! In 2025, Japan recorded just 671,270 births, while its fertility rate fell to a record low of 1.14 children per woman.

That would help your birth rate problem and give married couples less to worry and fret about… Then they could have time to regather joy. Hey, maybe even have sex and make babies…
