Can a Girl Chill?
Am I the Psycho Here?
Who taught us that the moment we crack our eyes open, we should get to making money, earning and working? Can a girl chill? Can a girl breathe?
Can I open my eyes first?
Before I have even fully opened my eyes, the world already wants to know what I am producing, earning, selling, finishing or turning into money.
Can a girl chill?
Can a girl crack her eyes open before the world starts asking what she plans to accomplish today?
I just opened my eyes.
Why are you already asking what I am producing?
Why are you asking what I am selling?
Why are you asking what I finished?
Why are you asking how I plan to turn my ideas into money?
Why does the morning belong to bills, customers, employers, deadlines and earning before it belongs to the person who actually woke up?
Can a girl chill?
Can a girl breathe?
Can a girl be alive without immediately becoming a money-making machine?
Work is not my god.
I work. I just do not believe I was born to wake up and immediately begin earning money.
I notice what is missing before anyone asks for it.
I remember what needs to happen tomorrow while handling what is falling apart today.
I am already working before my feet touch the floor.
So no, I do not need a lecture about the value of work.
I know what work is.
I am just not making work my god.
I do not believe every useful thing needs a customer.
I do not believe every talent needs to become a business.
I do not believe every idea needs to become income.
I do not believe every beautiful thing needs to be dragged to the market.
Women are working before anyone calls it work.
A woman can begin carrying the needs of an entire family before her feet touch the floor.
Before she completes one visible task, she may already be carrying twenty things in her mind.
Then somebody asks: “But are you working?”
A mother can work from the moment she opens her eyes until the moment she falls asleep and still be described as a woman who “does not work.”
But let her leave her own children, go into somebody else’s house, care for somebody else’s baby, wash somebody else’s clothes or cook somebody else’s food, and suddenly the work becomes real because money showed up.
The work did not become real when money appeared.
It was real before.
Money only made the world willing to respect it.
That is not proof that the work had no value.
That is proof that the world has lost its damn mind.
Money has been placed between people and nearly everything they need.
Then the world acts surprised that people cannot stop thinking about money.
Do the same thing every day for money that is never enough.
The money is never enough.
The bills keep coming.
Prices keep rising.
The children keep growing.
The family keeps waiting.
The body keeps getting tired.
The years keep passing.
Selling most of your waking hours and still being unable to rest is insane.
Working all year and still being one broken appliance, one medical problem or one missed payment away from crisis is insane.
Missing your children so you can pay for the house they are sitting inside is insane.
Working until your body hurts and then feeling guilty when you lie down is insane.
Turning every talent, thought, hobby and free hour into another way to make money is insane.
Teaching children that adulthood means earning just enough to return to work tomorrow is insane.
I am definitely not the psycho here.
I am not the psycho because I can see the cycle.
I am not the psycho because I do not want it.
I am not the psycho because I refuse to worship it.
The way the world is operating is insane.
I am definitely not the psycho here.
A girl will chill.
I only need enough to eat and live.
I do not need endless money.
I do not need endless work.
I do not need endless status.
I do not need endless proof that I am serious about life.
I know what enough looks like.
The world keeps telling people to want more.
More money.
More things.
More status.
More work.
More followers.
More customers.
More recognition.
More proof.
I do not need all of that.
I need enough food.
Enough shelter.
Enough tools.
Enough safety.
Enough peace.
Enough time with my husband.
Enough time with my children.
Enough time to think.
Enough time to design.
Enough time to notice the earth.
Enough time to build what actually matters to me.
A person who believes she needs endless more will work forever.
A person who knows she has enough may sit down.
And yes.
A girl will sit down.
I will take random pictures of nature.
I will stop because the sky looks strange.
I will take a picture of a leaf.
I will take a picture of water.
I will take a picture of a flower.
I will take a picture of a shadow.
I will take a picture of some little piece of nature that caught my eye.
I am looking at the damn earth.
Can a girl look at the earth?
Can a girl admire a cloud?
Can a girl take a picture and keep it to herself?
Can a girl have a private memory?
Can every beautiful thing stop being dragged into commerce for five minutes?
A girl will take random pictures.
A girl will notice things.
A girl will waste time staring at something beautiful.
And I do not even accept that it is wasted.
I will grow my own food and live peacefully.
I will learn the land. I will plant. I will watch things grow. I will eat what I grow.
I would rather spend time growing food than spend my whole life earning money to buy food whose price keeps rising.
I would rather know the land than know the latest office politics.
I would rather pick something I grew than rush through another morning so I can buy another thing I barely had time to enjoy.
I will spend time with my husband.
I will spend time with my children.
I will think.
I will design.
I will build what matters to me.
I will rest when I need to rest.
I will wake up slowly when I can.
I will not be ashamed because my life does not look busy enough to somebody else.
I am not turning every gift into money.
I may do something badly because I enjoy it.
I may do something slowly because I am not racing anybody.
I may stop halfway through and continue tomorrow.
I may rest before I am completely broken.
Rest is not the opposite of building.
A rested person can think. A supported mother can imagine. A peaceful mind can see paths an exhausted mind cannot see.
A father who is not crushed by bills can spend time with his children.
A family that is not always in crisis can create a legacy.
People who are not trapped in survival can learn, invent, grow food, repair things, care for the earth and open new paths.
A girl will breathe.
A girl will grow food.
A girl will take random pictures of whatever she finds beautiful.
A girl will spend time with her husband and children.
A girl will think, design, build slowly, notice the earth and live peacefully.
The world may keep running in circles for money that is never enough.
I will step out of the circle.
I will live.
I will notice the earth.
I will care for my family.
I will build what matters.
I will rest.
