BRAZIL BECAME OUR LIVING LABORATORYCHAPTER 15

The Shelter We Built in the Rain

We built a shelter in Prado with our own hands in December 2025. We had materials to find, dimensions to judge, rain to consider and children who still needed food and affection throughout the day. I knew how to solve practical technical problems, and Sher knew how to organize the functions a family needed. So we worked. A structure grew from the ground, and every part of it taught us something about how people inhabit a place.

A hurried shelter makes design mistakes easy to notice. Water reaches the wrong edge. A cooking space needs better airflow. A sleeping place must stay dry. Little things take enormous importance when five people share them. We observed, adjusted and carried the lessons into the building species Sher was already developing. The experience did not introduce us to architecture; it made the design questions immediate.

Even in that season we could enjoy ourselves. A successful roof adjustment felt satisfying. The children were curious about every activity. I liked the directness of building: there is the timber, there is the tool, and now there is a thing that stands. Sher imagined a far more delightful arrangement of living bodies and verandahs, with each domestic function placed exactly where it would make family life lighter.

The shelter gave us more than temporary protection. It added another set of measurements to the civilization’s architectural intelligence. We could test the details against real rain, real heat, real movement and real people. Every well-made future compound will carry some of that learning.
