THE SYSTEMS THAT HOLD EVERYTHING TOGETHERCHAPTER 40

Mind’s Eye: Keep the Thought Behind the Drawing

Some of Sher’s most important design work begins as a series of questions that a finished image cannot show. Why was the child’s toilet placed there? Why does the bath exit toward the dressing room? Why does this transport body have its own service corridor? Why does a Sabennerie connect to that public garden? The drawing is one moment in a much longer act of thinking.

Mind’s Eye is our way of preserving that intellectual work. Design records should carry the problem observed, the conditions tested, the iterations rejected or improved and the reasons an accepted form was chosen. They should also record whose idea created a new branch, what evidence supports it and how the system behaves when conditions change.

This is another lesson from software development. A program without its logic and version history is difficult to maintain intelligently. A civilization will be much larger than any one software release. Families, engineers and stewards who inherit it should be able to understand not just which component was built but why its anatomy matters.

We want children born into the civilization to inherit a world they can understand and improve. The record should make competent authorship easier for the next generation.
