THE SYSTEMS THAT HOLD EVERYTHING TOGETHERCHAPTER 39

Big King Media: Our Civilization Already Has Working Software

Big King Media began as a family-sized question: why should we scatter our life and work across half a dozen corporations’ platforms when we can build one connected publishing home? Sher called the organization into being long before we had written our own mature media software. She was producing lessons, family videos, articles, fashion, love stories and university content. I was trying to give all those forms of communication a common technical spine.

Our first tools were ordinary, if ambitious: websites, subdomains, off-the-shelf video and learning systems, WordPress, WPLMS, community plug-ins and hosting packages. In Korea we built a Multisite environment and pushed it hard. We explored galleries, streaming, domain transfers, SSL, Cloudflare and learning platforms. We learned the limits of plug-ins by asking for functions the plug-ins had never been designed to provide. More people watching a video meant another test of caching, storage and server resources.

The WPMU DEV record shows the work over several years. In 2021 the gallery navigation we wanted required custom HTML and JavaScript rather than a checkbox. In 2022 the wrong site URL in a Multisite database table could break the main site while another subsite ran normally. In 2023 media still pointed to older upload paths after a migration, and a request to move community settings across the whole network reached the edge of routine support. In 2024 our questions touched the semantic HTML behind video search, custom theme code, complex backups, course pages and staging. We were no longer merely website owners; we were learning the anatomy of a network.

That education paid off in Big King Media, our own software for a shared media layer across a WordPress network. Its working releases have included network-wide media organization, indexing and ways to reduce duplicated asset handling. We can trace the engineering decisions through actual code, installations, tests, revisions and outside reviews. The civilized thing here is control: the family and other capable publishers can maintain, use and improve an essential tool without relying entirely on an assortment of disconnected proprietary pieces.

Sher built the reason people came to our platforms. I built more of the machinery to carry the material she authored. Then our children grew into the photographs, voice recordings, sketches and videos. I find that a magnificent form of wealth. A family living together has produced an institution that holds the memory and the working knowledge of its own lives.
