GOVERNANCE, TRUST, AND WELCOMECHAPTER 44

Refugees and the Power to Welcome

I became interested in refugees because we had been the capable people asking for a place to live. An engineer can cross a border and suddenly become invisible. A mother can offer to design websites and teach digital skills in exchange for safety and receive a form saying the programme serves only people within a certain catchment. A child can need a passport while adults debate which office must retrieve a document.

At the same time, we met extraordinary kindness. Emre received us in Istanbul. Helpers in Korea offered food and shelter. People in Mexico considered how to welcome Sher while she was pregnant. Brazilian organizations assisted us when we arrived. We are grateful for these people and want the systems around them to make generosity easier.

International Welcome in the Trott Bailey Family Civilization begins with the family as a whole. A receiving place offers rest, nourishing food, practical identity assistance, orientation, childcare and access to the wider community. Pacorips can help match people to useful contribution once they are secure. Compound living gives hosts room. Travel systems keep family members together, and service teams recognize differences of language and culture as opportunities for enrichment.

We have invited faithful families and capable people to join us in creating this new world. A civilization that can receive a stranger well has proved something important about its own abundance.
