The way a country moves water tells you what it thinks water is for. A tap can deliver a measured quantity, charge for it and send the used water away. But water also carries life through a landscape. It can nourish soil, sustain orchards, cool the air, support beauty and return to productive use when it is handled intelligently.
Sher designs water as an organism moving through the family compound. Roof collectors, rain spines, catchment bodies, cisterns, reservoirs and planted ground are connected by the purposes they serve. Clean water reaches the places that require it. Other flows are separated and treated according to their use. A small architectural decision can keep a parent from hauling water across the house or prevent useful rainfall from being lost.
The idea took on substance in Brazil because we could watch real soil and rain. We could observe where plants recovered and where water ran uselessly away. We could work with the landscape instead of pretending the landscape was merely decoration under a building. The practical performance of the system matters to us, and so does the delight of a house surrounded by living green.
Water With Life is the name for that design intelligence. The family should experience it as refreshing, reliable and beautiful. The engineering can work quietly beneath the pleasure.
