WE TOOK CONTROL OF OUR STORYCHAPTER 54

Our Children Have Been Building Beside Us All Along

Our children have already spent much of their childhood at work with us. I mean beside us, in the affectionate family sense. Keilah grew from the baby in Miami into a girl who can question what wealth means and point to what she has made. Kaleeyon draws and imagines; there are family media projects in which children’s contributions belong alongside ours. Kezidek has entered the conversation in his own small way. His presence has already given Sher more reasons to inspect the design of washing, carrying, feeding and resting places.

People imagine a founding father too busy to know his children and a founding mother too ceremonial to raise them. Sher and I have taken an entirely different route. Our children see the everyday people we are. They know the sound of our jokes and the sound of our arguments about a design. They travel with us, plant with us, feature in media and see the platforms on which their own lives have been recorded.

The beach bicycle is a better portrait of my wealth than a ceremonial office. There is fatherhood in those journeys: salt air, three children asking questions, a little practical engineering to get everyone comfortably where we are going, and a household expecting us home later. I am not spending my adulthood waiting for retirement so I can know the young people living in my house.

When they step into the physical civilization, I want them to recognize it as the world their parents described while they were growing up. They should recognize their own sketches and ideas too. The founding family has always had more than two contributors.
